Applegate, Oregon, is an unincorporated community west of Medford in the extreme southwestern portion of the state. The area is known for its vineyards and wineries. Much of the recreational opportunity is centered around the Rogue River and the Cascade Range.
History
The area grew after the arrival of the railroad in the 1880s. Prior to that, trappers and traders sought their fortunes in the pursuit of animal pelts. In 1851, gold was discovered along the banks of the Rogue River; eventually $70 million worth of gold was extracted from the watershed.
