History

The area grew after the arrival of the railroad in the 1880s. Prior to that, trappers and traders sought their fortunes in the pursuit of animal pelts. In 1851, gold was discovered along the banks of the Rogue River; eventually $70 million worth of gold was extracted from the watershed.

Parks and Recreation

The Valley of the Rogue State Park is situated in the verdant, green Rogue Valley. Picnickers, campers and anglers all converge on this scenic venue. The area was made famous by novelist and dedicated fisherman Zane Grey in the 1930s.
